Senior Diplomats show concern, task Jega ahead of 2015 elections

2 Min Read

The international community has revealed that they are closely monitoring events in the Nigerian political landscape and have stated their willingness to ‘support’ Nigeria, before, during and after the 2015 elections in order to forestall civil unrest and a breakdown of law and order.

The Ambassador of Netherlands to Nigeria, Ambassador John C. M. Groffen, made these known during a public working visit to Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission at his office in Abuja.

The ambassador said he had been following the recent developments in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party which he described as an “interesting situation”.

According to him, “we are interested to see free and fair elections, as it will help Nigeria become a more stable economy.”

In response Jega said, “We are aware that friends of Nigeria are anxious as we move towards the general election and they are keen to know the challenges that we face, ahead of the elections. We are aware that stable nation will lead to improved economic growth.

“Our job is to use electoral process to ensure that elections are conducted with credibility and add to political and economic stability of the country,” Jega said.

He added that the upcoming elections in Osun and Ekiti states would not be a repeat of what happened in Anambra State.INEC-Chairman-Prof.-Attahiru-Jega
