A 40-year-old man, Kayode Adedeji, has received a death sentence by Osun State High Court in Osogboto for robbing a woman of N3,420.
Adedji is to be hung by the neck till he is dead. The sentence was handed down on Wednesday for a crime that was committed in April 2009.
According to prosecuting counsel for the state, Elisabeth Alabi, Mr. Adedeji robbed one Omowumi Adebayo at Bolorunduro area in Ilesa of the money armed with a knife at midnight.
It was also revealed that the robber had other dangerous weapons during his attack on Mrs. Adebayo’s residence.
Adedeji then reportedly fled the scene of the robbery but was unable to escape as he was arrested by some members of the Oodua Peoples Congress in the area.
He entered a plea of not guilty to the one count charge of armed robbery at his arraignment eight years ago and was granted bail.
The convict according to Mrs. Alabi then abused his bail privilege by committing another offence which led to his remand in Ilesa prison.
In her ruling, presiding judge, Kudirat Akano, held that Mr. Adedeji was guilty of the crime and liable to punishment.
While the defence counsel, Tunde Adedokun, prayed the court to be lenient and merciful, it was not to be as Mr. Adedeji was ordered to be put to death by hanging.
