First Bank basketball team on Tuesday beat opponent Taraba Hurricanes 100-22 in the second phase of the 13th Zenith Bank Women Basketball League.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match was played at the Murtala Mohammed Square indoor Hall in Kaduna.
Speaking after the game, Augustine Balewa, Secretary General of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) commended the organisation of the women’s league.
He said that there had been a great improvement in the quality of matches even as it was now broadcasted live on television.
“The number of matches has also increased from three to five phases and they will hold in Abuja, Kaduna, Asaba, Ibadan and Lagos.
“Interestingly, 18 teams will be participating in the first and second phase. Twelve teams will move and play in third phase and fourth phase while eight will advance to the final,’’ Augustine said.
The General Secretary said that next year the league would be split into two — the Premier and Division 1.
Also speaking, the Technical Commissioner, NBBF, Ajibarede Bello, said the league was aimed at promoting women sports.
He said the standard of the game had been high and very competitive and there had been no serious injuries.
He commended the Kaduna State Basketball Association for providing the necessary support.
