ASUU says it is prepared to call off the strike within 24 hours

1 Min Read

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that it will suspend its ongoing strike within 24 hours if the demands it tabled before President Jonathan on November 4th are met.

The Union said comments made by Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike,  that it made outrageous new demands were “untrue and absolute lie”.

A senior ASUU leader told journalists that they want the agreement reached with President Jonathan to be signed by a senior member of his cabinet, preferably the Attorney General, Bello Adoke and not by a Permanent Secretary.

The Union also wants the President of the National Labour Congress (NLC), Abdulwaheed Omar, to sign the agreement.

Finally the Union said it wanted the President to warehouse within the Central Bank, the N200 billion agreed for intervention programmes in the University system.

ASUU’s National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the Government had also only released N30 billion for earned allowances and was yet to release another N100 billion.

Many members of the Nigerian public have lost faith in ASUU and have described the demands of the Union as selfish.
