Obasanjo splits G7, bars Governors from joining APC, PDM

2 Min Read

Confusion has settled in the camp of the G7 governors as former President Obasanjo has told them to shelf any plans to join opposition parties All Progressives Congress (APC) or Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).

Obasanjo has told them to instead resolve their differences within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Obasanjo is reportedly the godfather of several of the G7 governors especially the Northern members including Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Rabiu Musa Kwakwaso of Kano. The elder statesman is said to have practically influenced their emerging as governors and he is respected by them.

“I prefer that you seek ways out of the crisis in the PDP. It is better you work with Jonathan than to join parties that harbour people who should ordinarily be in jail as we speak,” Obasanjo was quoted as telling the governors.

Obasanjo is said to have some irreconcilable differences with key opposition figures such as Bola Ahmed Tinubu and as such is the reason why he would not permit such a political union.

Obasanjo’s stance has brought confusion into the ranks of the G7 as several of the governors have already began making peace overtures to the Presidency.

“I believe that people like you should talk to the president so that he can look into our requests. We have been talking of eight points. He can consider two of them and pave the way for us to reconcile. It is better we remain together in the PDP than go to another party to start afresh,” the G7 member pleaded with sources close to the administration.

Wihlst Adamawa, Kano, and Sokoto governors had resolved to join the APC, other members of the G7 are said to be making peace moves to remain in the ruling PDP.
