NPA pensioners set to protest over non-review of entitlements

2 Min Read

Some Pensioners of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) under the aegis of Concerned Pensioners said they would protest over the non-review of their entitlements by the organisation on Friday.

The group, made-up of retirees of 2006 and 2007, at a news conference in Lagos, said that the ultimatum they gave NPA to remedy the situation expired on March 8, 2017.

According to the Chairman of the group, Mr Johnson Olukoya, if by Friday, NPA still keeps mute on the issue, we will call our members out for a protest.

He said the group had made several appeals to NPA but to no avail.

Olukoya said that in spite of being paid monthly entitlements regularly, the non- review of the entitlements had pitched the pensioners against the Management of NPA.

“Whereas our contemporaries in the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation have been enjoying these benefits we are asking for.

“The NPA Concerned Pensioners Group has the mandate of over 90 per cent of the pensioners.

“The group is a child of necessity to temporarily fill the vacuum created by the ousting of the former Executives of the NPA Pensioners Welfare Association by the court.

“We are agitating for the payment of the benefits of NPA pensioners in accordance with Section 173 (3) of the Nigerian Constitution,’’ Olukoya said.

The Secretary of the group, Mr Emmanuel Otomewo, said that the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission in 2015 told NPA to review the pension rates payable to pensioners.
