The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Wednesday launched Energy Club in three secondary schools in Lagos to encourage youths to attain their dreams of becoming engineers.

The schools are Eko Akete Secondary School, Ajele, Lagos Island; Girls Junior and Senior Academy, Sura and Girls Senior Secondary School, Keffi, Ikoyi.

Mr Oladele Amoda, Chief Executive Officer of EKEDC, said that the club was launched in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and United States Energy Association (USEA).

Amoda, represented by Mr Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, Corporate Communication, said that the objective was to encourage young students, especially the females, to pursue engineering courses.

He advised them to rededicate their efforts on science subjects if they want to be engineers.

Amoda said that the company would continue to visit different schools in Lagos with different books and gifts to encourage more students to join the club.

“If you look around, you will discover that we do not have girl-child in the area of engineering discipline in our universities.

“The company wants to use the opportunity to appeal to girls to take interest in the engineering course.

“We are trying to encourage our youth through this medium; through the club, we will educate them and advise their parents on the area of energy conservation.

“We will be visiting them on weekly basis to encourage more students to join the club,” Amoda said.

In his remarks, Mr Afolake Bello, the Vice-Principal, Girls Junior and Senior Academy, Sura, thanked the company for launching the club in the school.

Bello said that the gesture would encourage more students from the school to join the club, urging more private companies to emulate such gesture. (NAN)
