Senator Sola Adeyeye, a former Professor and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committe of Education has called for a reduction in allowances earned by lawmakers, asking for a 50% cut.
The Senator made the call whilst speaking on the ASUU strike action with newsmen in Abuja.
Adeyeye called on the National Assembly to earmark 26% of the county’s budget to education due to the rot in the sector that demands urgent and immediate attention.
He said cutting allowances of lawmakers would also serve to placate ASUU members as the union was motivated by the luxuries and entitlements being enjoyed by lawmakers.
In a less popular suggestion, the politician asked that the NAtional Assembly enact a law mandating all Nigerian workers to pay 5% of their income as Education Tax.
