Resident doctors in Kaduna State on Wednesday in Zaria appealed to Federal Government to urgently implement the National Health Act to improve access to quality healthcare services by Nigerians.
Dr Sokomba Aliyu, Chairman, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital chapter, National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), told newsmen that the Act would eliminate quacks in the sector, if signed into law.
According to him, the implementation of the National Health Act is extremely necessary to access basic health funds and regulate the country’s health system.
The doctors recalled that the National Health Act was signed into law in 2014 but yet to be implemented by the federal government.
Also speaking at the briefing, NARD President, Dr Ibrahim Zakariyya-Abubakar, urged federal government to enrol all resident doctors into the Integrated Payroll System (IPPIS) to prevent leakage in the system.
He decried the infrastructural and personnel deficit in health facilities, which had become dilapidated and called on the state government to employ doctors for tertiary hospitals across the state.
Zakariyya-Abubakar called for full implementation of corrected Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS) for state doctors.
The resident doctors also urged the federal government to release the circular on “house officer entry point” as well as the unified template for residency training in Nigeria. (NAN)
