Chairman appeals to Kogi Govt. not to decentralise varsity

2 Min Read

The Government of Kogi has been urged to rescind its decision to decentralise Kogi State University (KSU).

Mr James Ugbeda, Chairman of the Alumni Association of KSU, Abuja chapter, made the appeal in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday

According to him, improving on the structure in the university’s main campus is imperative and more urgent than decentralising the institution.

“I am not against decentralising the university to other parts of the state, but as it is now, I don’t think we are ripe for that.

“What we need is to solidify the structure on the university campus, Anyigba.

“The major faculties and departments that make up the university as it is today should be left where they are.

“Government should consolidate on them before we can think of getting mini campus anywhere else. If not the main campus will be degraded’’, Ugbeda said.

Mr Felix Okolo, the Legal Adviser of the association in Abuja, said decentralisation should be jettisoned.

“When Audu was alive, he gave much attention to that school. He saw KSU as a child of necessity, and he provided all that were needed for its development.

“Former Gov. Ibrahim Idris who succeeded him also did his best but as I am talking to you now, KSU is a shadow of its former self’’, Okolo said.

He said politics was the bane of the institution, “as it is no longer receiving priority.’’

Okolo urged the present government to build more laboratories, structures and facilities before decentralising the institution even if it was necessary.

NAN recalls that Gov.Yahaya Bello had presented a Bill aimed at decentralising the university with two more campuses to the State House of Assembly. (NAN)
