Golf: 100 children to participate in Abuja Junior Golf Training

3 Min Read

Taiwo Oriss, Secretary, Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) says 100 children will take part in the maiden edition of Junior Golf Training programme in Abuja,

Oriss told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the training programme was aimed at building the capacity of interested young Nigerians in the game of golf.

He said that the programme would help the federation to discover young talents in the game.

Oriss said that one major reason for hosting the event in Abuja was to popularise the game, adding that the game was not so popular in the FCT.

According to him, “our aim is to discover hidden talents in golf.’’

“The programme is not only targeted at junior golfers, we are targeting young boys and girls that are interested in the game and want to make a living in golf.

“We have been doing this in other states but this time we want to start it in the FCT.

“For now we are yet to get sponsors so we are looking at a 100 children for the programme in the Abuja.

“If you have been following golf events, you will see that young golfers that have made Nigeria proud are discovered in Lagos and other states of the federation.

“This time we want to start up a new initiative and this is like a test run of what we want to do in the coming year, the Junior Golf Training programme,’’ he said.

Oriss said that the federation had succeeded to do so much in Lagos, adding that it wanted to show its presence in Abuja.

He said that the success of the maiden edition would determine the continuity of the event.

“The events in Lagos have been a success but we want to come to Abuja to reduce the concentration in Lagos.

“We are ready to do this in any state as long as we can get supports,’’ he said.

Oriss however solicited support from well-meaning Nigerians for the game, adding that the NGF board was not living any stone unturned to ensure the success of the programme.

NAN report that the NGF Junior Golf Training Programme was slated for Dec. 13 to Dec. 16.(NAN)
