Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said on Thursday that he has thrown away his U.S residency green card.
Wole Soyinka, who had vowed to “tear” his green card should Donald Trump emerge victorious in the U.S elections said, “I have done it, I have disengaged (from the US). I have done what I said I would do.”
He made this statement in a conference at the University of Johannesburg. He further said, “I had a horror of what is to come with Trump…I threw away the green card, and I have relocated, and I am back to where I have always been.”
Soyinka said he would however not discourage others from applying for a green card.
“It is useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerian or anybody from acquiring a green card…but I have had enough of it,” he said.
Soyinka, one of Africa’s most famous writers and human right activist, reportedly just completed a term as a scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African-American Affairs.
