Arsenal are now out of the English Footbal League competition after they were beaten 2-0 by Southampton at Emirates last night.
Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand secured passage to the semi-finals for the visitors in the first half as Arsene Wenger’s reserves did next to nothing to suggest they merit consideration for Saturday’s tough trip to West Ham.
Only Mohamed Elneny remained from Sunday’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth, taking Wenger’s changes over the last three matches to 23, yet this side had a strong look to it with £17million Lucas Perez leading the lines, Aaron Ramsey at number 10 and Francis Coquelin joining the Egyptian in the engine room.
But only one of his starters had a goal to their name this season – and both of Lucas Perez’s came against Championship opposition in the EFL Cup – and that was apparent in 45 minutes where Arsenal enjoyed plenty of possession without once mustering a shot on target.
