CSR Watch: GTBank Extends Support For African Gifted Foundation’s To Fourth Consecutive Year

3 Min Read

For a fourth consecutive year, GTBank Plc has shown its commitment to the development of the African child through its support for the African Gifted Foundation Summer Camp. The initiative is geared towards providing a unique educational experience for gifted secondary school students from across several African nations.

Yearly, the programme selects exceptionally talented students between the ages of 14 and 19 from different African countries. These students are taught various subjects such as space exploration, cyber-security and global commodities trading by experts in the industries, leading universities in the UK and diverse African countries during a weeklong camp.

The African Gifted Foundation academy is designed for students gifted in mathematics and science, who are in the top 2% category in their school. The students participating in this year’s academy were shortlisted using their examination results, teacher’s recommendations, and a short essay by the student. In this year’s edition which held in Ghana between the 21st and 27th of August, 2013, schools that have participated in the GTBank football tournaments (The Principals and Heritage Cup) benefitted from this rare opportunity. Adewunmi Adefolaju and Ukomadu Nelson from Igbobi College, Ossai Chioma from Methodist Girl’s High School, Awarun Adetolah from King’s College and Lawal Aramide Ansar-ad-deen College represented Nigeria.

GTBank CEO Segun Agbaje, recognizes the importance of contributing to the growth of the African Child.

According to him, “the Bank recognizes the importance of educating the people in community and has done this through a series of programmes that are impactful and beneficial to their well being, day to day activities and social interaction.”

Segun Agbaje further stated that “the Bank’s interest in supporting education is borne out of a commitment to the development of young people in the African community. Education plays a major part in the development of life skills and values in the society and we support a wide range of education programmes that bring learning opportunities to young people in the country.”

Guaranty Trust Bank is an ardent supporter of education and the Bank has over the years supported educational programs for children in and outside the classroom through the ‘adopt a school’ initiative and the various sporting programmes organized for schools at different times of the year.
