2 Min Read

No fewer than 1,000 expectant mothers in Kirikasamma in Jigawa, have benefited from a N35 million nutrition support programme initiated by the Child Development Grant Programme (CDGP).

The CDGP Desk Officer in the area, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, stated this while reviewing the progress of the programme on Friday in Kirikasamma.

CDGP programme is supported by the British Department for International Development (DFID) to control malnutrition, maternal and infant mortality rate at the grassroots.

Kirikasamma and two other participating local government councils were designated as the pilot project in the state.

Umar said that each of the registered women had been receiving N3, 500 monthly stipend under the programme to improve their nutrition intake.

“The programme is providing N3, 500 allowance on monthly basis to the women, beginning from the early pregnancy up to the end of breastfeeding period,” he said.

The Desk Officer explained that the gesture was to enable expectant and breastfeeding mothers to eat better meals and ensure healthy feeding of infants.

He said that the programme had been providing support to the mothers within the past two years, adding that it had recorded significant progress in the control of maternal mortality in the state.

He urged the beneficiaries to ensure effective utilisation of the money to improve their health status.

Alhaji Muhammad Kani, the council’s Caretaker Committee Chairman, commended the gesture, adding that it would go a long way in enhancing healthcare delivery in the area.

Kani pledged the council’s support to facilitate smooth implementation of the programme.(NAN)
