2 Min Read

Mr Godwin Obaseki has been sworn-in as the new governor of Edo state, for the next four years, at the expiration of the term of office of Adams Oshiomhole.

It was a colourful event on November 12, 2016, at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin city, the Edo state capital.

Residents, supporters of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) from the state, as well as those from other parts of the country, converged on the facility to witness the inauguration of the Governor and his Deputy, Philip Shuabu.

In the state box, other dignitaries like the outgoing governor, Adams Oshiomhole and his wife, the National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun, some former and serving governors, were also present at the event.

Following the laid down procedures at events of such nature, the Chief Judge of Edo state, administered the oath first on the deputy Mr Shuaibu, after which Obaseki was sworn in.

After the swearing-in exercise, he went ahead to perform his first function as governor by inspecting the inauguration parade in a motorcade after which he presented his inaugural address.

The new governor promised to do his best in taking the state to the next level.

With the old order of Governor Adams Oshiomhole now over after eight years of stewardship, much is expected of the new governor, as he begins his reign as the chief occupant of the Dennis Osadebe avenue for the next four years.

INEC had declared Mr Obaseki, winner of the Edo State governorship election on September 28, 2016.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Ize Iyamu, came second in the election.

Obaseki is an indegene of Benin. He attended the University of Ibadan, as well as Colombia University in the United States.
