Ecological Fund: Governors to take matter to NEC

2 Min Read

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) says it will take ecological devastations and funding issues to the National Economic Council (NEC) for urgent attention.

The forum also said that it would partner organisations and donor agencies in addressing the challenge.

The Chairman of NGF, Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, made this known in an interview with newsmen after the forum’s emergency meeting on Monday in Abuja.

Yari said that the agenda of the “emergency meeting’’ held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, was on the environment, especially ecological problems and its effects on the country.

He said that the governors, as key players on national issues, considered it important to discuss and seek the way forward on ecological devastation in Nigeria.

“We have a presentation that one of our colleagues collected from the UK High Commission and it has it facts on our environmental destruction.

“We, as governors, have the responsibility to sit down and discuss this issue and chart the way forward.

“The way forward requires funding; we considered the level of desertification in the north, the oil spills in the Niger Delta as well as the problem of erosion in Anambra and other parts of the country.

“We discussed and agreed that we are going to table this matter as a national issue before the National Economic Council where other partners and members will be present,” Yari said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 25 governors and their commissioners for finance attended the emergency meeting. (NAN)
