Getting A University Degree Wasn’t In My Destiny – Africa’s Richest Woman, Folorunsho Alakija

2 Min Read

Africa’s richest woman and Nigerian businesswoman, Folorunsho Alakija while speaking at an annual event organised by Daystar Christian Centre, Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday said it was not in her destiny to get a university degree.

The businesswoman, who ranks among the richest women in the world, noted that although she never got a university degree, it didn’t hinder her from achieving her dreams.

Speaking at the annual event, Mrs Alakija, the founder of Rose of Sharon said:

“If I had the opportunity of going to the university, maybe I would have come out with a second class upper or lower but that didn’t happen; that wasn’t to be my destiny.”

She continued: “I would have loved to go to the university as we all know that university education is good but some of us who have not gone, it is not the end of the world.”

Speaking on her ambition and how she achieved her dreams through determination, Alakija said:

“Having put my foot in the door, I decided I was not going to turn back.”

“A lot of things have been said about me, some say I sold my way to the top; I remember that the headline of one of the national dailies in the country once said ‘Hairdresser given an oil block’. So I even became a hairdresser, one of the many names I was given.”

She however encouraged participants at the event to believe in themselves, stay ambitious and disregard ill comments from their detractors.
