It seems the purpose of his visit was to properly apologize to Ndume’s family as he had implicated Ndume as being his sponsor while on trial.
Ndume had gotten into trouble and was charged for providing Al-Zawahiri with politicians’ phone numbers and not disclosing information to authorities under Nigeria’s Terrorism Prevention Act
Zawahiri who has been said to be mentally unstable had also alleged that Ndume had sponsored him to undertake in Boko Haram activities, a claim which Ndume denied. Ndume who was arraigned along with Zawahiri also denied claims that he passed classified information to an unauthorized person.
According to reports, Zawahiri had visited the home of Ndume last Sunday at night but was turned away and told that Ndume was not in the country.
“When the Maigadi (Gate man) accosted Konduga that the senator was not in the house, requested to see Justice Aisha Ndume, one of the senator’s wife, but was asked to come back the following day.” said a source
“As luck will have it, Konduga revisited the house on Wednesday at exactly 4pm, where he was identified by some Ndume’s close associates, who accompanied the senator to the Federal High Court, Abuja then.
