The Ogun state commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye has disclosed that over 60 million Nigerians have mental disorder.
He further noted that over 80 percent of such people are walking the streets without knowing or seeking help while 20-25 per cent live with a full blown mental disorder.
Dr. Ipaye reveled that mental disorders could be as mild as minor mood swings to extreme cases of mental disorder.
He further said that one in every five Nigerian is suffering from extreme mental disorder.
Explaining the range of the mental disorder, Dr. Ipaye noted that events could trigger minor mood swings which could lead to a full blown extreme case.
He further added that such events could be as a result of marital pressure, educational or economic pressure. He added that disappointments could also play a major role.
He however advised that people should go for psychotherapy checkup and urged the government to establish community mental homes.
