The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, on Wednesday urged government at all levels to create job opportunities, to curtail rising cases of kidnapping in the country.
Martins gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that the increasing incidents of kidnappings including monarchs by the youths, should be seen as the direct effect of joblessness.
“In the first instance, I do not think that anything should make an individual to take away the freedom of another individual.
“Only the state has the right as it were, to restrict people’s freedom, and therefore kidnapping cannot be justified in any way, it is not right.
“ However, we know that there are certain circumstances that make people to toe that line of life such as the poverty that is there in the land.”
“And I believe that as far as government is concerned, it ought to make efforts to create more employment opportunities for people.
“Ensure that it creates environment that will make people to even make effort in creating their own employment facilities and opportunities.
“These are the kind of things that I hope will be able to help.”(NAN)
