An 8-year-od Ugandan girl has been arrested by security operatives on suspicions of Lesbianism.
The girl was reported and subsequently arrested and detained by the police after she was allegedly seen kissing her female friends.
A local newspaper reported that the Jinja Police Child Family Protection disclosed that the girl was reported by her neighbours after she was spotted engaging in “romantic relationships” with other girls her age.
The neighbours were reported to have said the girl had been repeatedly caught in the act as she had “repeatedly lured her friends to a farm near her house, where the girls would engage in inappropriate behavior with one another.”
Speaking on the arrest, the officer in charge of the case, Catherine Wobuyaga disclosed that the girl who is now in detention has confessed to the crime she was accused of.
Victor Odero of Amnesty International’s East Africa said: “The girl should be immediately and unconditionally released if she is still in detention.
“What she needs is protection and respect for her privacy, rather than being treated as a criminal.”
