JPB urges government to Intensify efforts at blocking leakages

2 Min Read

Participants at the just concluded meeting of the Joint Planning Board have called on the states and Federal Government to intensify efforts at blocking leakages to reduce cost of governance and ensure efficient allocation of resources.

This is contained in a communique issued on Thursday at the end of meeting of the Joint Planning Board and National Council on Development Planning held between Aug. 23 and Aug. 25 in Kano.

The communique also urged the Federal Government to address the challenges in the power sector value chain by urgently addressing infrastructure, pricing and regulatory constraints.

It also urged the Federal Government to review trade policies to discourage importation by incentivizing value-chain development and protecting infant industries, especially labour-intense manufacturing industries.

”Furthermore, governments at all levels should explore innovative ways of financing properties, including unclaimed dividends.

“The national public-private partnership (PPP) framework should be reviewed to ensure mutual trust and confidence of the public and private sector stakeholders.’’ the communique said.

The meeting also resolved that government at all levels should adopt appropriate macroeconomic policies and create a supportive business environment for economic growth.

According to the communique, government should digitalise land registries and streamline relevant legislation.

It further called on the government at all levels to fast track the process of developing their medium-term plans (MTP).

It also called for the re-creation of ministry of budget and planning at the state level to enhance partnership between the state ministries and the MBNP.

The communique urged government at all levels to intensify efforts toward rebuilding capacity of staff of departments of planning, research and statistics to deepen planning and budgeting processes (NAN)
