Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in gold medal position and defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill in bronze after a thrilling first morning of the heptathlon.
Ennis-Hill ran 12.84 seconds to win her 100m hurdles heat and give herself an early edge, then cleared a season’s best 1.89m in the high jump.
But Johnson-Thompson jumped a British record of 1.98m to storm into the lead.
Belgian Nafissatou Thiam matched that mark to put the 21-year-old second.
Johnson-Thompson will go into the evening session on 2,264 points, an advantage of 12 points over Thiam and 22 on Ennis-Hill.
