Kaduna State Govt. warns landlords against channeling toilet pipes to drains

2 Min Read

The Kaduna State Government on Thursday warned landlords to stop channelling toilet pipes to public drains or face sanctions.

The Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA), Lawal Jibrin, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.

According to him, landlords channel pipes from their septic tanks into the public drains thereby polluting the environment.

He added that those who perpetrate this act, cite high cost of disposing their human waste as reason.

He said the practice was very bad, because when waste was discharged into the drain the odour that oozes out was repulsive and could cause diseases such as dysentery and cholera.

He mentioned Kawo new extension, Nasarawa and Television village as the most notorious areas where this is being practiced.

“ Those areas are densely populated and many people living there think they can do anything they like.

“But we have been curbing the practice; it has reduced drastically to the minimum level.

“The Public health workers are empowered by the Public Health Law to detect nuisance, abet nuisance and to charge offenders to the law court.

“We also make sure the pipes are removed, making sure that they don’t channel the pipe from their toilets into the drains,’’ he said.

He said that due to the efforts of the Environmental Health workers, the practice was on the decrease, unlike what it used to be.

Jibrin said it was illegal to channel sewage drain into the gutter, and warned that any offender when caught would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He appealed to the public to report offenders to the law enforcement agents for necessary action. (NAN)
