10 Things You May Not Know about Kerry Washington

3 Min Read

You probably read about the recent secret wedding of Kerry Washington to Nnamdi Asomugha of the San Francisco 49ers.  You also probably know about her hit TV show, “Scandal,” and her role in the film, “Django Unchained.”  But there is more to Kerry than meets the eye, and every great public figure has a story.  Here are a few things about Kerry Washington that you may not know:

1) Kerry was born in the Bronx, and is the daughter of a professor and educational consultant, Valerie Washington.  Her father Earl is a real estate broker.   Her father’s family is from South Carolina and her mother’s family is from Jamaica.

2) Kerry says that in addition to being African American, she is part English, Scottish and Native American.  No word on whether the English and Scottish were the result of “massas” ways on the plantation.

3) Washington got started acting with the Tada theater teen group and also attended the Spence School in Manhattan.  She went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa at George Washington University, majoring in Anthropology and Sociology.

4) Kerry has some experience in the music industry as well.  She co-directed and appeared in the music video for the song “I Want You,” performed by the rapper Common.

5) In 2013, Kerry was ranked #2 on the People Magazine list of the 100 Most Beautiful People.

6)  Kerry’s TV show, “Scandal,” has been called the most talked about show on Twitter every Thursday night.   The show was hailed by the New York Times as “post-racial television,” where characters are diverse, but not defined by race or ethnicity.  There goes that term “post-racial” again!

7) Kerry was awarded Outstanding Actress in a Drama at the 44th NAACP Image Awards and was also given the NAACP President’s Award.

8) Washington was engaged to actor David Moscow from October 2004 to March 2007.

9) When serving as the 2013 commencement speaker for her alma mater, George Washington University, Kerry was presented with an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts.

10)  Kerry is very active in politics.  She is a member of V-Day, a movement designed to bring attention to violence against women.  She also heavily supported the campaign of President Barack Obama, speaking at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
