Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state says the state governments spends N850 million monthly on the payment of teachers’ salary.
Tambuwal made the disclosure in Sokoto on Thursday at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sokoto Education Development Trust Fund.
He said the government was also spending huge amount of money in purchasing assorted teaching and learning materials for its schools.
He explained that such expenditure on education was borne out of his administration’s priority to the sector, especially in its determination to revamp it.
”This is the reason the state government declared a state of emergency on the sector, and allocated the largest share of the 2016 budget to it,” he said.
Tambuwal commended the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, for providing credible leadership to the state and the country.
In his remarks, the Sultan lauded the fund for its relentless efforts at assisting youths in the state to acquire education.
“The fund has recorded tremendous achievements in all its activities in the last 14 years, ‘’ he said.
Abubakar solicited the support of the people to fund education sector, saying that funding education should not be left to the government alone.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the fund, former President Shehu Shagari, expressed his commitment to initiating programmes that would continue to promote education in the state. (NAN)
