The Nigerian Army on Saturday inaugurated environmental sanitation in Maiduguri as part of the 2016 Army Day celebration.
Brig.- Gen. Victor Ezugwu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, started the exercise at the Monday Market, Maiduguri.
Ezugwu said the objective of the exercise was to mobilise residents of the state towards cleaning their environment.
He said that the programme was launched in partnership with the State Government to ensure that all parts of the state were kept clean.
“We are here today to flag off environmental sanitation at the Maiduguri Monday Market as part of this years’ Army Day celebration.
“The idea is to sensitise the public on the need to clean their surroundings and maintain healthy living”, Ezugwu said.
He added that the army decided to launch the programme following restoration of peace in the state.
Ezugwu pointed out that the programme was launched at the market to send signals to residents on the importance of maintaining clean environment.
He advised the residents to keep the tempo by cleaning their homes and working environment.
Alhaji Kakashehu Lawan, the Borno Commissioner for Justice commended the Nigerian Army for the gesture.
“It is a laudable programme; the state government will provide all the needed support to ensure that it is sustained.
“This is the first time in five years that we are witnessing this kind of clean up at the market,” said Lawan ,who represented Gov. Kashim Shettima at the event.
He said the state government was looking at the possibility of re-introducing weekly sanitation at the market to ensure cleanliness. (NAN)
