Nigerian Senator In Trouble Over Niger Delta Crisis

Joel Bisina, the executive director of Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment has berated Senator Binta, who represents Adamawa North, over recent statements about the crisis in the Niger Delta.

Senator Binta, who represents Adamawa North in the Senate had, on June 7, 2016, said the terrain of the proposed Maritime University was unsuitable, claiming that it was inconvenient to have taken a boat and travel through the waters for over 30 minutes before reaching Okerenkoko, the location of the university.

Bisina, who is from Egbema, a riverine community in Warri North, said the comments of Senator Binta did not show unity amongst Nigerians and could invite outrage from the Niger Delta people.

Bisina, who stated this in a recent interview, said there was no other way to end the crisis and agitation in the Niger Delta, other than to address the development needs of the region and enable the people to benefit from the resources in their communities.

Bisina said: “The other day there was a debate on the floor of the Senate and a senator from the north, one Senator Binta, said why site a university in a place where people have to travel in a boat for 30 minutes. It shows the level of ignorance on the part of the senator.

“When you listen to such kind of comments from people who call themselves Nigerians who are reaping from and benefitting from the Niger Delta oil largesse, one gets angry, one gets so irritated.”
