Femi Fani-Kayode Dumps Party, Calls PDP a “Sinking Ship” Not Worth Salvaging

2 Min Read

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode (Former Aviation Minister), yesterday declared for the yet to be registered All Progressive Congress, APC, describing his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a sinking ship.

Fani-Kayode, a former PDP chieftain, who said he was not sure the party was worth salvaging, said he left the party to pitch his tent “with those that my spirit has been with long ago”.

The former minister spoke at Ekiti State Governor’s Office shortly after a visit to Governor Kayode Fayemi. He said: “I am not sure that great leaders have respect for the party again. I am not sure former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is respecting the party again.”

Fani-Kayode, who expressed dismay at the aftermath of the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, election where a faction being propelled by the PDP had been creating confusion, which he described as a mockery of democracy, said many Nigerians were disenchanted by the situation.

He said: “It has driven away people from the PDP; it is driving away people from the party. As for me, I left the party long ago. I now join those that my spirit has been with long ago.”

The former minister, who described the aftermath of the NGF election as a “charade,” said River State Governor Rotimi Amaechi won a keenly contested election, which some people were contesting under the pretext that their candidate had been endorsed. He said: “Endorsement is different from election.

An election was fought and won. Somebody won by three votes and was declared winner. Then a faction emerges that its candidate had been endorsed.

What manner of democracy is that? This can only happen in Nigeria. But we won’t allow it.

“This speaks to us about the 2015 general elections. So, if the APC presents a candidate and the candidate wins, somebody will now say the candidate did not win. No, that is unacceptable and it will not stand.”
