The Senate have today resolved to put into place a law making kidnappers liable to be put to death in a bid to curb the menace.
A spate of kidnappings has been occurring in recent times with it becoming the trend for criminals nationwide. Only last week Senator Iyabo Anisulowo was abducted and was only able to regain freedom yesterday.
The senate has come down hard approving of the law for the death penalty when it came up for debate after a recommendation.
The senate was also keen to increase the information sharing dynamics between security agencies so as to foster more efficiency between agencies as for too long, investigations have been hampered due to security agencies not working properly with each other.
The senate also urged states to enact laws that aid the prosecution of kidnappers, this was even as they urged security agencies to train and retrain their personnel.
The deputy Senate president, Ike Ekwerenmadu was of the opinion that Nigerians themselves hadn’t helped matters by panicking too much when kidnapping occurs and paying the ransom demanded too quickly.
President of the senate Bukola Saraki praised the efforts of the committee and noted the need for such a stringent law to curb the prevalence of kidnapping.
