Edward Christopher of Nigeria on Sunday qualified for the main draw at the qualifiers match of the ITF Men’s Singles Circuit of Dayak Abuja Open.
Christopher beat Mostafa Hatem of Egypt 6-3, 6-0 to qualify for the main event.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the game, Christopher said he would endeavour to excel in the next round of matches.
“I will endeavour to play my best tennis in order to impress our sponsors and make Nigeria proud.
“I will like to say a big thank you to the organisers of this tournament for doing a great job for Nigerians and making history for Nigeria and for attracting players from different countries to come to Nigeria to play the game of tennis,’’ he said.
In other matches played at the same venue, David Pel from Netherlands defeated Delmas N’Cha of Benin 6-1, 6-4, while David Chaplefeh-Forchap from Germany beat Neeraj Elangovan from India 6-4, 6-4.
Anvit Bendre of India edged out Nigeria’s Aliyu Shehu in two straight sets 6-3, 6-4 while Ilija Vucic from Serbia defeated Johannes Myburgh of South Africa 6-2, 6-1.
Zack Mccourt of U.S. also thrashed Argentina Agustin Moyano in two straight sets of 6-1, 6-4.
