Finally!: PDP holds NEC meeting

2 Min Read

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has finally resolved to convene a meeting of its National Executive Committee, bringing to an end the months of uncertainty over when next the NEC meeting would be convened, despite the party’s constitution that a meeting must be held at least once every quarter.

This was made known in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh on Friday in Abuja, although it did not give a specific date for the meeting.

The statement also indicated that the issue of setting up standing and ad hoc committees would be on the agenda at the meeting. It also disclosed that the corrected version of the PDP constitution approved at the 2012 convention of the party would be presented to the NEC for ratification.

“The approval of NEC in this regard will assist in widening the scope of participation by party stakeholders in the mobilisation and sensitisation efforts and help the national leadership in driving the vision and manifesto of the party to ensure the success of the Transformation Agenda of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP administration,” it said.

It has been speculated that the leadership of the party has been reluctant to convene the meeting due to the fear that it would be hijacked by forces opposed to the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and oust him.

The party has descended the crisis since the last NEC meeting was held in July 2012, with PDP governors and the national chairman disagreeing over the way the party should be ran.

Meanwhile, the party has also given clarifications on the on-going ministerial briefing was aimed at assessing and evaluating the performances of federal ministers in delivering their mandates in the interest of all Nigerians, after which a report on the exercise would be exhaustively discussed between the President and the leadership of the party.
