LASG Finally Begins Stability Test On Lekki Gardens Buildings

2 Min Read

After a building constructed by the company collapsed, killing at least 35 persons, the Lagos State Government has commenced the proposed stability test on other buildings constructed by Lekki Gardens.

Recall that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had ordered the test to determine if the buildings were “liveable” for the inhabitants or not.

In a statement on Sunday, the acting General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, Engr Rasheed Balogun, said the test will be constructed on some of the buildings without the need to send occupants away while some may have to vacate the premises.

He however assured the occupants of Lekki Gardens Estate that the aim of the test was not to cause them discomfort but to ensure their safety.

The statement quoted Balogun as saying that the test will be extended to other construction sites and estates within and around the Lekki area to confirm their “liveability status”, in line with the governor’s directive.

He urged the occupants of structures in Lekki Gardens Estate to vacate their premises until the completion of the investigations, in line with the governor’s order.

Balogun noted: “There is a test called coring test, which has a partial destructive tendency, while we are also carrying out another test on some buildings called pundit test, which will not cause any damage or make any mark on the buildings.

“The concluding part of the tests will be completed in our laboratory before we now determine the state of these buildings.

“The position of the state government is that any building that is defective and structurally unfit for habitation should be demolished.”
