SERAP Threatens Legal Action Against CBN Over Secret Recruitment

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened legal action against the Central Bank of Nigeria and its Governor, Godwin Emefiele after a recent revelations showed that the apex bank secretly employed the children and relatives of politically and economic connected people in the country.

In an open letter dated Friday, March 18 and signed by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, SERAP advised the advised the bank to “immediately withdraw hundreds of letters of employment issued following a seriously flawed recruitment process and to put in place a system of recruitment and hiring based on the principles of non-discrimination, transparency, participation and objective criteria such as merit, equity and aptitude.”

The group said it may be forced to take legal action if the bank fails to accede to its request or act on it within 14 days of receiving the letter or seeing it in publication.

In the open letter, the group said the secret recruitment violated the right of every qualified Nigerian to seek employment at the bank and violated all known laws promoting non-discrimination, merit, equity, aptitude and human dignity.
