The Federal Statistics office on Friday has said life expectancy in Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, is on the rise, according to the latest government figures.

Newborn girls in Germany are now expected to live until the age of 83 years and one month.

The lifespan of their male counterparts is estimated at 78 years and two months.

The report says in the past ten years, the figure has risen for boys by two years and three months and for girls by one-and-a-half years, reaching a new life expectancy high for Germans.

Germany’s growing elderly population is also expected to live longer.

“Men aged 65 have almost 18 years ahead of them on average, while women in that age group are statistically likely to die shortly before their 86th birthday,” it noted. (dpa/NAN)
