Army: Buratai Vows To Investigate Human Rights Violations

1 Min Read
Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has promised to look into all cases of human rights complaints levelled against the Nigerian Army and its personnel, especially in the prosecution of the war on terror in the North East.

Buratai said this on Thursday when he commissioned a Human Rights desk under the Department of Civil-Military Relations.

The Army chief, who was represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (CCMA), Major General Rogers Nicholas, said that desk was the first of its kind in the Army, adding that the day marked a memorable one in the annals of the history of the Nigerian Army.

Explaining the rationale behind the desk’s establishment, the Army chief said it was necessitated by the increased interest of the local and international human rights bodies in the Army’s activities in the North East and other parts of the nation.

Also, the army said it would bridge the gap that exists between the military on the one hand and human rights bodies, civil populace and civil society organisations on the other hand.
