A woman on death row in a prison in Vietnam has escaped execution after she managed to get pregnant in prison.
According to Vietnamese law, a female prisoner on death row will have her death sentence commuted to life imprisonment if she has a child under 3 years.
The convict, 42-year-old Nguyen Thi Hue, was sentenced to death in 2014, after she was arrested in 2012 for drug trafficking, which is a capital offence in the Asian nation.
After a judge rejected her appeal in 2014, she began to plot how to avoid being executed, as her sentence stipulated.
She then decided to get herself pregnant.
At the mixed prison where she was kept, Hue reportedly paid a fellow inmate the sum of £1,600 in August 2015 for his sperm, which she used to inject herself, Daily Mail reports, quoting Vietnamese paper Thanh Nien.
The male inmate, 27-year-old Nguyen Tuan Hung, twice left his sperm in a plastic bag in an agreed secret spot inside the jail, where the female inmate later picked it up.
After collecting the bags, she used a syringe to inject the sperm into her system, which got her pregnant.
Four guards at the Quang Ninh province jail where the incident happened have been placed under suspension.
Hue is expected to give birth in two months.
