2 Min Read

275 Boko Haram suspects finally regained their freedom following their arrest and detention by the Nigerian Army for alleged terrorism and insurgency activities in Borno State.

While handing over the suspects to the state Governor, Kashim Shettima, the Theatre Commander of the counter-insurgency operation, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Hassan Umaru said the released detainees were arrested by the military from different locations in the state for alleged involvement in terrorism and insurgency activities.

He said the detainees have been “properly profiled, screened and cleared,” adding that it decided to release them to their families through the Borno State government.

“In line with the principle of justice, equity and fairness, we released them to their families,” he declared at a brief ceremony at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

“I am confident that these detainees will be ambassadors to the Nigerian military,” he added.

He further disclosed that 142 of the total 275 detainees were males, 49 females, 22 under-aged males and 50 female children. Others released include two Nigeriens and two Cameroonians.

He said eight cases that were criminal in nature would be handed over to the Nigerian Police for further investigation and possible prosecution in the court of law.Shettima, while receiving the detainees on behalf of their families, commended the military for being fair.

He also pledged that government would assist the released detainees to start a new life, adding: “The children among you will be returned to school.”

He said there can be no development without peace, adding that the released adults would be trained in skills and other trades so that they would be fully engaged, as peace gradually continues to return to the state.
