Senate abolishes NERC tariff hike

1 Min Read

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki has today during the 8th Senate directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to effective immediately suspend the recent hike in tariffs which were implemented on February 1, 2016.

The suspension of the approximately 40 percent upward review in tariff by the NERC, according to a Facebook post by the Senate President himself was necessary because there was no commensurate increase in service delivery by the power companies, adding that: “any increase in cost without the appropriate improvement in service delivery by the power companies is unacceptable. “

Further in the Facebook post, Saraki urged the power companies to provide metered billing to every establishment in Nigeria to avoid billing based on estimated and not actual consumed power.

“Furthermore, the power distribution companies must work to ensure that very establishment in Nigeria is provided with capabilities for metered billing. Doing this will end the sharp practice of arbitrary billing, which estimates the power consumption of Nigerians in the generation of their monthly bills.”
