Pandemonium broke out in the Mulero, Dopemu area of Lagos State last Monday when a 49-year-old pastor identified simply as Bassey residing in Abari Street killed himself following an accusation by his church members that he diverted church funds.
The incident occurred around 5am, after the victim woke up around 3am and was pacing about the compound before he was convinced by his wife, called Iya Emmanuel, to go back to bed, Punch Metro reports.
Aside his wife, the deceased pastor also left a young son behind. Both of them have been arrested in connection with the death.
The case was reported at the Dopemu police division and the remains of the deceased was moved to a morgue.
However, according to reports, the victim left a note exonerating his family from his death, just before slashing his throat with a knife.
It was learnt that the alleged suicide note read: “I, myself, not my wife”.
Neighbours described the relationship between the late pastor and his wife as “very friendly”, and one neighbour said the pastor helped his wife with her hair before the incident.
The case has been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, (SDCI), Panti, Yaba.
