2 Min Read

In a commando like style, the Delta State police on Friday engaged a dare-devil armed robbery gang in a shootout which resulted in the death of one the robbers and two others were arrested.

The deadly gang was reported to have attacked innocent persons along Uloho Avenue in the Ughelli metropolis when the Police, acting on a tip-off, closed in on them.

An eyewitness gave an account of the robbers, who went from house-to-house attacking citizens, especially holidaymakers, before the Police waded in and engaged them in a shootout. Two of the robbers were arrested, while one was killed.

According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, the leader of the gang was killed by the police.

“The two arrested are currently helping the police with investigations. Two double-barrel guns, one locally made pistol, and four expended bullets were recovered from them,” she said.

Meanwhile, a housewife, Jolomi Ekundayor, in Ekredejebor community, Ughelli town, was allegedly robbed at gunpoint, of N200,000 by a robbery gang last Thursday.

The victim was said to have withdrawn the money from a bank in order to settle some of her bills when she was allegedly waylaid by the hoodlums few metres to her house.

Sources said the armed robbers waylaid the unsuspecting victim while she was driving home in an Audi 80 salon car with registration number, No. AA 246 ASB. She was stopped and ordered to surrender the money.

Confirming the incident, Kalu said a team of policemen, who were on the trail of the suspected robbers, pursued them but they escaped into the bush.

“The robbers abandoned their vehicle but the police are still combing the bush with a view to arresting them,” she said.
