Man, 48 steals N170m From Nigerian Breweries

A 48-year-old man, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for allegedly withdrawing the sum of N170,000,000 from a Nigerian Breweries account for his personal use.

The accused, Aliu Olaribigbe Ayinde, was arrested by the police at Ikoyi Division, Lagos.

Ayinde has been charged with 3-count of conspiracy to wit and stealing.

The police said that the accused was arrested following complaints by two banks that he fraudulently conspired with others now at large to withdraw the sum of N170 million from the account of Nigerian Breweries Plc in a new generation bank to his account in the same bank and he later transferred all the monies to different accounts in other banks including the transfer of the sum of N446,000 into his account at an old generation bank in Lagos.

The police further stated that the bank’s management discovered the theft when they audited their account, and reported the matter to the police.

According to the police, Ayinde’s offence contravenes sections 409, 335 and 285 of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Oshin admitted him on bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties each in like sum with proof of tax payment to the Lagos state government.

However, the matter was adjourned till 21  March, 2013 for mention; while the defendant was moved to Kirikiri Prison pending his fulfillment of the bail conditions.
