War On Terror: Army Inaugurates Joint Human Rights Monitoring Team

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai

The Nigeria Army has inaugurated a joint human rights monitoring group comprising the force and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).

This was disclosed by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai on Monday at the NBA workshop organised at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, Borno State.

Buratai said the Army was committed to upholding human rights, even as it continues to wage the war on terror in the North East geo-political zone in the country.

Several human rights organisations had accused the Army of flagrant disregard for human rights in the past, and the calls to look into human rights violations have become even louder as the war on Boko Haram insurgents intensifies.

The Army chief said the army as a responsible instituted derived its power from the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will abide by its provisions in the conduct of its affairs.

He said the personnel of the force had been properly trained both at home and abroad on the need to uphold human rights, while saying there would be no hiding place for any of them that tramples on the rights of any citizen.
