Gov. Lalong

A fire outbreak at the Kabong market in Jos, Plateau state has razed 118 shops, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

The fire incident is believed to have started early Thursday morning, although the cause could not be ascertained.

It is believed to have been caused by an electrical spark from one of the affected shops, and started by 4.00am on Thursday, the Chairman of the market traders association, Christopher Jama, told the Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, who came to assess the situation first-hand.

The chairman said 118 shops containing bags of maize, beans, rice, and poultry products, were completely razed in the inferno.

He appealed to the governor to intervene in the situation to provide respite for the traders whose shops and wares were affected.

In his response, the governor expressed shock at the development, while expressing his gratitude to God that no life was lost.

He directed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce to get to the root of the matter while liaising with the market union and report to him.
