Yesterday, Volkswagen of America announced that owners of 120,000 diesel cars that were fitted with emission cheat software will be given $500 gift cards and another $500 for the repair of their vehicles.
Spokesperson for Volkswagen, Jeannine Ginivan said that owners of about one quarter of the 482,000 vehicles affected in America have signed up to receive the offered gift cards.
The total amount to be spent on benefits could top $120 million and this excludes sums to be paid for already existing lawsuits.
VW at the beginning of this emission scandal set aside $6.9 billion to cover costs that might arise. The United States EPA had earlier stated that VW might face up to $18 billion in fines.
