Why NGO Is Dragging CCT Judge To Court Over Bribery Allegation

1 Min Read

A non-governmental organisation through its lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) has dragged the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, before a Federal High Court in Abuja over claims that he made a demand of N10 million bribe to put an end to the criminal proceedings against an accused person standing trial before him.

The NGO, Registered Trustees of the Mission for Peace and Development Initiative, filed the suit before an FHC sitting in Abuja claiming that Umar demanded the bribe from a retired Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Rasheed Taiwo.

The group further claimed that Umar, through a personal assistant identified as Gambo Abdullahi had already collected N1.8 million of the said sum.

Part of documents attached as exhibits to the suit is a cheque purportedly showing evidence of the N1.8m already paid to Justice Umar through Abdullahi.

Also attached was a copy of a statement made before the EFCC in which Justice Umar allegedly admitted having a private conference with Taiwo in his office, and a statement from his suspected proxy, Abdullahi.
