WHO Declares Sierra Leone Ebola Free

1 Min Read

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Sierra Leone Ebola-free after the country passed the 42-day threshold without any new case of the outbreak of the disease.

In an announcement on Saturday, the WHO representative in the country, Dr Anders Nordström, praised the “tremendous hard work and commitment” of those involved in the fight against the killer disease.

“We now have a unique opportunity to support Sierra Leone to build a strong and resilient public health system ready to detect and respond to the next outbreak of disease, or any other public health threat.

“The power of the people of Sierra Leone is the reason why we could put an end to this outbreak today,” he said.

The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has led to the death of at least 11,000 people since its outbreak in West Africa in 2014, with most of the casualty coming from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Liberia was declared Ebola-free in September.
