The Apapa Area 1 command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) between January and September this year, generated N221.9billion revenue, an increase of 39.65 per cent when compared to N216.3billion attained within same period in 2014.
Already, the command is about 91 percent close to its 2015 revenue target of N242.9billion.
The command attributed success in revenue collection within the period to increased level of supervision of customs personnel through unscheduled visits to various units and desks by the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Charles Edike.
According to the command, increase in revenue was achieved through dedication of personnel despite various challenges such as decline in import volume and restriction of Foreign Exchange (FOREX) to 41 items.
The command said it had invested efforts and resources in training licensed customs agents to shore up their knowledge and keep them abreast of the modernization ongoing in the service.
Making reference to the suspended strike embarked upon by Dockworkers Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Edike said it would not dampen customs morale for increased revenue collection at Apapa.
He explained that the command might only experience some delays in payments, noting that the command was optimistic that revenue due to it will be collected.
