Reason Behind CCT’s Adjournment Of Saraki’s Case

2 Min Read

The Code of Conduct Tribunal has on Wednesday adjourned its case against the President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to November 5th and 6th, 2015.

Adjourning the case, Justice Danladi Umar stated that further proceedings of the CCT will be determined by the result of the ruling of the Court of Appeal on an appeal by Dr. Saraki challenging the constitution of the CCT.

Saraki had approached the Court of Appeal seeking its ruling on whether it was lawful for two judges, instead of three, to preside over the CCT trial against him.

According to the Prosecuting Counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the determination of the Court of Appeal case before the continuation of the CCT trial is important because any decision by the Code of Conduct Tribunal would become null and void if the legality of the number of trial judges sitting on the case is not first laid to rest.

In a related development, the Senate President was said to have attended the CCT trial with over 80 Senators, but an investigation by TVC News dispelled the earlier reports, stating that the senators that accompanied Dr. Saraki were not more than 30.

Dr. Saraki is facing a 13-count charge bordering on false declaration of assets when he was Governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2011.
